Arctic conditions and the question of how to access these places safely pose extreme challenges that require experience to manage risk and mental strength to deal with the problems that invariably come up. The reward is a glimpse of a fleeting world of spectacular beauty that is accessible only for a moment and will be gone by summer, melted into the sea.

BENEDIK
Alexander Benedik is an Austrian underwater videographer, photographer, and filmmaker renowned for his expertise in capturing extreme sub-zero ocean environments. With a diving career spanning over two decades since 1998, he began in tropical waters like Indonesia and the Philippines before specializing in cold-water expeditions to places such as Norway, Russia's White Sea, Antarctica, and Greenland. Benedik is famous for revealing hidden underwater worlds, including rare sea creatures beneath icebergs in Greenland—such as arctic jellyfish, skeleton shrimp, unusual nudibranchs, snails, kelp, and whale bones—often in temperatures as low as -5°C. His dives in the White Sea have showcased stunning ice formations and unexpected marine life like sea butterflies and sitting jellyfish during 70-minute immersions in -1°C waters.
He has authored articles on unique dive sites, such as Austria's seasonal Green Lake, a flooded valley with crystal-clear waters reaching 11 meters deep and visibility up to 40 meters. Benedik's film "The Mother of Diamonds – Kimberlite" earned the Grand Prix at the 2024 Neum Underwater Film Festival. He shares his captivating "underwater poetry" through his YouTube channel Global Dive Media and Instagram (@globaldivemedia), where he has amassed over 11,000 followers. Benedik frequently collaborates with freedivers like Anna von Boetticher and plans repeated expeditions to Greenland to document its otherworldly sub-ice ecosystems.
